Betsy Thompson, 92    

    Karlstad - Betsy Thompson, 92 of Karlstad,  went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, February 17, 2017 at the Karlstad Healthcare Center surrounded by her loving family.
    A funeral service was held on Monday, February 20, 2017 at the Karlstad Assembly Of God in Karlstad, with Rev. Richard Wadholm officiating.  Burial was held at the Karlstad City Cemetery.
    Arrangements were made with Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls.
 

Arnie Skeie, 79    

    Winger/ Fosston - Arnie Skeie, age 79, of Winger and Fosston, owner of Ultima Bank Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at Essentia Health Hospital in Fosston. A celebration of Arnie’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Reverand Aage Carlsen officiating. Family will greet friends for one hour prior to the celebration of life service in the church. - Harry James Przybylski Jr. of Perry, FL, formerly of Thief River Falls, passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at his brother Ski’s residence in Perry, FL at the age of 68 with his family by his side.
    A memorial service honoring Harry’s life will be held at a later date.

- Jerome “Jerry” Gerardy, age 78, Plummer, passed away Tuesday February 21, 2017 at his rural home in Plummer.
    Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:30 p.m., Saturday, February 25, 2017 at St, Bernard’s Church, Thief River Falls, with Father Rick Lambert presiding.  Burial will be at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Cemetery, Plummer, at a later date.
    Visitation will be Friday, February 24, 2017 from 4 - 7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service at St, Bernard’s Church and also one hour prior to the service, Saturday at the church.

- Bernelda “Bernie” Burger of Thief River Falls, passed away February 14, 2017 in Mesa, AZ.
    Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls, with Father Rick Lambert presiding.  Interment will follow at St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery, Thief River Falls.
    Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service on Friday, March 3, 2017 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls.  Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
    Bernie was born on Christmas Day, 1929 in St. Cloud to Raymond & Veronica (Klaverkamp) Dietman.  She attended John Clark Elementary in Rockville and graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School in 1947.  Bernie attended St. Cloud Business College, later working for the St. Cloud Times and St. Cloud State College.
    Bernie married Virgil Burger on October 11, 1951 at Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Rockville.  The young couple made their home in Holloway and Holdingford, before settling in Thief River Falls in 1958. Together they raised four children.  
    Bernie was a beautiful role model to her children and grandchildren - the heart and soul of her family.  Friends and family benefitted from Bernie’s hospitality and amazing cooking and baking skills. She was especially famous for her banana bread and chocolate chip cookies. Friends could always count on Bernie’s pecan pie for their birthday. For over 50 years, Bernie enjoyed coffee parties with neighborhood friends. Yes, Bernie spread her kindness far and wide.  
    After her children were grown, Bernie worked for Northland Technical College in the Ag Department and as an Election Judge. She was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.  
    Virg and Bernie made their winter home in Mesa, AZ beginning in 1987.  Here they were able to connect with their Holdingford friends from years ago as well as other MN retirees.  When family visited, Bernie would welcome them with open arms, baked goodies and freshly squeezed lemonade. Virg and Bernie enjoyed traveling and gardening, but mostly being with their children and grandchildren.  
    Bernie is survived by her brother: Verlin (Joanne) Dietman of St. Cloud; children: Linda (Steve) Larson of Excelsior, Brenda (Rande) Smith of Little Falls, Tom (Brad Rystedt) Burger of Wilton Manors, FL, and Ann Olimb of Warroad; grandchildren: Tony (Sherry) Larson, Rob (Angie) Larson, Abby (Nick) Walker, Ben (Jaclyn) Smith, Blake (Stacy) Smith, Eric (Jessie) Olimb, Melissa Olimb, and Lindsay Olimb; great-grandchildren: Austin, Juliette, Olivia, and Henry Larson and Russell, Magnolia, Ava, and Thorin Smith.
    Bernie was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Virgil, January 19, 2014; parents; great-grandson, William Anthony Larson; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gene and Rita Burger.  
    Memorials are preferred to St. Bernard’s Catholic School, the TRF Education Foundation, or the Poor Clares Monastery in Sauk Rapids.

    Plummer
- Jerome “Jerry” Gerardy, age 78, of Plummer, passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at his rural home in Plummer.
    Mass of Christian burial was held on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. Burial will be held at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Cemetery at Plummer at a later date.
    Jerome “Jerry” Matthew Gerardy was born September 18, 1938 at Mercy Hospital in Thief River Falls to Peter and Barbara (Jaeger) Gerardy. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church in Plummer. Jerry attended Pershing High School and graduated in 1956.
    On April 12, 1958, Jerry was united in marriage to Carol Davis at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Oklee. The couple made their home on the Gerardy family farm north of Plummer where they raised their 8 children.
    Jerry was employed at American Crystal Sugar from 1957-1966.  He continued to also work the family farm. After leaving the sugar beet plant, he decided to make family and farming his career. He was a grain farmer, raised dairy cattle, pigs, chickens and sheep until he semi-retired in 1994, but was still active on the farm helping out his son, Tony. Following his semi-retirement in 1994, Jerry and Carol enjoyed traveling.
    Jerry had many hobbies and interests which included farming, gardening and spending time with his family.  He had a knack for fixing anything that was broken.  He also liked visiting with many of his friends. They were Red Lake County Outstanding Dairy Couple and Outstanding Family in 1990.
    Jerry was a member of the following groups:  Plummer School Board, Plummer Creamery Board, American Dairy Association, Charter member of Plummer Lions Club, Church Council of St Vincent de Paul, Knights of Columbus, Head of the maintenance for the Plummer Senior Homes, Saxon of the St. Vincent Cemetery in Emmardville Township. He was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.
    Jerry and Carol raised 8 children and still found time to take in numerous foster children, who were still a part of their lives as they grew older.  Jerry taught his children many traditions, such as making sausage and horseradish. He enjoyed making lefse, donuts and cookies with his wife to share with friends and family during the holidays and coleslaw for many community events.
    Jerry was a kind, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend to so many.  He was a strong man of his faith.  He will be missed by so many.  
    Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Carol; children:  Tammy, Charles (Cheryl), Kevin, Nancy Wallberg, Peter (Mary), Tony (Sheila), Barbie (Mike) Konickson, David; grandchildren:  Kyle (Whitney) and Jeremy (special friend, Jessica), Joshua Gerardy, Matthew (Melissa), Chris (special friend Sarah), Nicholas Wallberg, Rachel and Hannah Gerardy, Mallory (Charlie) Bernstrom, Brett (Hannah) and Abigail (special friend Logan) Gerardy, Gabrielle and Briana Gerardy, Dylan and Rylee Gerardy; great grandkids: Bella Gerardy, Emmersyn Gerardy, Dakota Wallberg, Briar Bernstrom and baby Gerardy due in August; along with many nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law: Ella Peterson, Mary Lou Mersenski, Jenny Vattendahl; and brother-in-law, Charles Davis.
    Jerry is preceded in death by his:  father, Peter; mother, Barbara; sisters, Doris and Noreen; and brother, Ron.

    Thief River Falls
- Harry James Przybylski Jr. of Perry, FL, formerly of Thief RIver Falls, passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at his brother Ski’s residence in Perry, FL at the age of 68 with his family by his side.
    Harry was born July 28, 1948 to Harry and Florence (Jorgenson) Przybylski in Warren; he was the second of twelve children. He grew up in the Warren/Argyle area. He attended school in Warren up through the 11th grade. He met Betty Frazer in Badger in 1974 and they were married on April 19, 1974. They made their home in Montana, Minnesota, and Florida.
    Harry worked for Mannco Logging in International Falls, Cenex in Laurel, MT, and he was an experienced over the road truck driver for many years.
    Of the things that mattered most to Harry, family was most important. He loved to golf, fish, bowl, and sing karaoke. He loved to sing and when he did, he sounded just like the artists themselves.
    Harry is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Betty; son, Sheldon (Stacy) Fraser and their children, Sierra and Shelby of Belgrade, MT; four daughters, Tracy (Donald) Jimison of Thief River Falls and their children Aaron (Jessica), Stetson (Bri), and Tray (Breanna), Shannon (Allen) Belange of Crookston and their children Kayla (Mark) of Holden, UT, Kari of Crookston, and Alyssa of Duluth, Kila Villa of Margate, FL and her children Matesha and Bo, both of Thief River Falls, and Rose (significant other Darin) Przybylski of Goodridge and their childen Brittany of International Falls and James of Thief River Falls, and many great-grand children; siblings, Jewel Kostrzewski of Argyle, Christine (Bill) Hickey of Margate, FL, Sheryl Bergeron of Warren, Roger Przybylski of Warren, Deb (Sonny) Kostrzewski of Argyle, Gail (Teresa) Przybylski of Wesley Chapel, FL, Celeste Sherlock of Grand Forks, ND, Ramona (Mike) Schmidt of Alexandria, Mark (Brenda) Przybylski of Warren, and Terry (Patty) Przybylski of Florian; Aunts, Marlys Giebel of Kissimmee, FL and Refina Keegan of Grand Forks, ND; Uncle, Dennis Jorgenson of Umatilla, FL; and nieces, nephews and cousins. And best friends Ted and Deb Wolden of International Falls, along with many friends.
    Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Sr. and Florence; infant brother, David; brothers-in-law, August Kostrzewski and Gary Sherlock.
    A memorial service honoring Harry’s life will be held at a later date.

- Corrine Ann Swenson, of Middle River, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2017 at her residence in Middle River, at the age of 75.
    Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt.  Interment followed at Ringbo Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Holt.
    Corrine Ann (Olson) Swenson was born at home on September 20, 1941 in Falun Township, the daughter of George and Ida (Karlstad) Olson.  In 1957 Corrine was baptized and confirmed alongside her sisters, Kay and Carol at their home.  Corrine attended grade school in Salol, and attended high school in Roseau.
    Corrine was united in marriage to Eldon Swenson on March 5, 1960 at the Pine Grove Church in Pencer.  They made their home on Eldon’s family farm. Corrine was a hard-working farm wife and housewife until her husband became disabled. She then worked as a nurse’s aide for over 25 years at Oakland Park Nursing Home in Thief River Falls.
    Corrine’s favorite pastimes were spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, reading, watching TV, dancing, embroidering, gardening, and yard work.  She loved to visit and have company. Corrine also enjoyed collecting Denim Days and porcelain dolls, decorating for Christmas, and spending time with her family during all the holidays and birthdays. Corrine took many memorable bus trips with friends and family.
    Corrine was a member of Ringbo Emmanuel Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid until its closure. She then joined Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt. Throughout the years Corrine was a member of the Ringbo Homemakers, helped with election judging for East Valley Township, the Holt Quilting ladies, Christian Women’s Club, Middle River Community Club, and the Golden Girls (retired Oakland Park gals). She was an honorary member of the Middle River Sportsman’s Club (cooking and pulling pork for Goose Fest).
    Corrine is survived by her children: Cecelia “Tootsie” Swenson and her special friend, Jim Frederick of Middle River, Rebecca (Mitch) Brodersen of Newfolden, Cynthia (Bruce) Pepperling of Roseau, Dawn Blank and her special friend, Rick Peterson of Newfolden, and Robert Swenson and his special friend, Rebecca Anderson of Middle River; grandchildren: David John Vickaryous, Nicole (Preston) Lenz, Brandon (Ali) McBride, Hayden Brodersen, Steven Kukowski and Sara and Ashley Kukowski and Mike, Heather, Kristian, Teila, and Nick Pepperling, Dylan and Sawyer Eisenbarth, Colton, Walker, and Emma Blank, and Cody and Cari Swenson; great-grandchildren: Hailey Lundgren, Tristan Lenz, Bryliegh and Iliana McBride, Blaine Olson, Stetson and Sutton Kukowski, Audrena, Kenna, and Harper Pepperling; sisters and brothers: Carol (Jay) Garthus, Ione (Tom) Fillmore, Kay (Gene) Sistad, Janice (Adrian) Neisius, Charles Olson, Ron (Carla) Olson, and Diane (Andrew) Thiessen; sister-in-law: Eileen Frigard; special friends: Cathy Erickson and Helga McBride; and the quilting gals of Nazareth Lutheran; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, relatives, and friends.
    She is preceded in death by her husband, Eldon; daughter, DeLayne McBride; grandson, Caleb Vickaryous; her parents, George and Ida Olson; brothers, Gerald and LeRoy Olson; sister, Elaine Sundahl; mother-in-law, Emma Swenson and brother-in-law, Hank Frigard.

- Doloris Evelyn (Lippert) Wedul died on Friday, February 24, 2017, at home as she wished. In her own bed. In her own time. Cared for by her own children.
    Doloris was born September 10, 1915, on a farm 4 ½ miles west of Bertha. The second child of Katherine (Klaseus) Lippert and Adolf Otto Lippert, she outlived her brother J. Arwin Lippert and sisters Dorothy (Joseph) Blashack, Doris (Bernard) Kelley, and Florence Lillian.
    Doloris began country school with her brother at age 4. She was salutatorian of their high school class of 1931. After a Teachers Training course in Fergus Falls, she taught in country schools for 3 years before going to Moorhead Teachers College, where she met Melvin O. Wedul, truly the love of her life. They were married on December 1, 1939. They moved to Winona in 1946 when Melvin joined the faculty at Winona State University, then known as TC. Doloris finished her Bachelor’s degree at WSU while raising five kids.
    Doloris will be remembered for her hospitality, her homemade bread, her cakes delivered to the Lutheran Student Center, the annual neighbors corn feed in her backyard, and the mittens she knitted for her Lincoln School pupils so they could go out on the playground even on cold winter days.
    At Central Lutheran Church – 71 years a member – she worked hard for the pipe organ, made Lutheran World Relief quilts, knitted prayer shawls and for decades taught Sunday School, including one year with her baby son Mark in a basket next to her.
    Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Sons of Norway, welfare babies, special ed. kids, exchange students – all knew her attentions. For her descendants, she leaves a lofty legacy to aspire to – a strong sense of duty, a sense of fairness, compassion for the underdog, welcoming of strangers, standing up for what’s right, intolerance of the sleazy or evil, an innate sense of decency, dignity, reverence and respect.
    Doloris is survived by her children: Sylvia (Steven J.) Pecsenye, Strand (Patricia Rader) Wedul, Mark (Judith Busdicker) Wedul, Lita (Odd) Haddal, Chad (Judith Kinowski) Wedul; grandchildren: Magda Pecsenye, Steven Michael Pecsenye, (Amanda), Kimberly Wedul (Jeff Durkin), Ted Wedul (Angie), Andrea Wedul, Leah Wedul, Leif Wedul, Maren Sofie Haddal, Chad Christian Haddal (Risa), Paal Haddal, Sarah Urbick, Katherine Wedul; great-grandchildren: Robert French, Thomas French, Madison Durkin, Liam Durkin, Ella Wedul, Luke Wedul, Haakon Haddal, Alexis Urbick, Ella Urbick, Grace Urbick.
    She is also grieved by exchange son Guillermo Barrera and family, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews as well as neighbors and friends who call her “Mom” or “Grandma.”
    Doloris was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and siblings, and exchange son Djamal Aminoedin.
    Funeral Service will be on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Central Lutheran Church, with visitation one hour prior to service. A visitation will also be held on Friday, March 3, 2017 from 4-6 p.m. at Fawcett Junker Funeral Home. Interment will be at a later date at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Luane Hanson, 38

Trail - Luane “Lu” Hanson, age 38, died unexpectedly Friday, December 23, 2016 at his home in rural Trail.
       A funeral service to celebrate Luane’s life was held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, with Rev. Timothy Lundeen and Rev. John Voelker officiating. Burial was held at Nazareth Church Cemetery, Hickory Township, Pennington County.
    Luane Harry Hanson was born June 1, 1978 in Thief River Falls, to Howard and Linda (Watne) Hanson.  Luane was born and raised on the family farm, being baptized and confirmed at the Nazareth Lutheran Church, rural Trail.  
    Luane attended and graduated from Oklee High School in 1996.  From 1995-1997 he attended Northland Community College in Thief River Falls resulting in earning his  A.A. and A.A.S. degrees.  From 2001-2006 he attended BSU in Bemidji, graduating with a B.S. Degree in Mass Communications. While attending college, Luane worked various jobs including Hugo’s in Thief River Falls  for 11 years, served as the Arts and Entertainment Editor for BSU for 3½ years, the Cameraman for PBS (Lakeland Public Television) and as a DJ for FM90 KBSU.
    Luane was always an adventurer at heart, so, in 2006 Luane decided to embark on his journey and spent the next 3 years traveling from the East Coast to the West. His journey took him to Front Royal, VA, to Seattle (Seafair as an H1 Hydroplane Race Security Committee) and finally to Las Vegas, NV (Angel Park Golf Course) before returning home.
    In 2011, Luane won a life-changing trip from Marlboro to go to Durango, CO, to upgrade a high Mountain Trail. While there, Luane made memories and friends for a lifetime.  That Fall Luane decided to attend NWSB for Wooden Boat Building in Port Hadlock, WA, from 2011-2012. While in school Luane did boat shop volunteering at the NW Maritime Center as well as being a winter schooner maintenance on a 133-foot gaff-rigged schooner “Adventuress.”  Luane was also a commercial copywriter for USA today and Livestrong.
    After graduating Luane was hired immediately by the Haven Boatworks LLC in Port Townsend, WA.  One of his biggest accomplishments and most pride while in WA, was a beautiful 8’ skiff boat he handcrafted and built, which he has documented at:  http://buildingmyboat.tumblr.com/.
    In 2013, Luane truly proved no child loved his parents more, by setting aside his passions and leaving them 2000 miles behind to help his parents while they dealt with health issues. Even though in Luane’s heart he wanted to return back to Washington to the ocean, mountains and his second family (friends) that he loved, it was so very important to him to make sure that his mom got the treatment she needed at Mayo, which they fought and won. While staying on the farm and taking care of his parents, Luane wrote and published four books, created fabulous meals and worked on beautiful, hand crafted wood projects.  Luane was very talented and his work will be treasured forever.
    Luane loved life and wanted to experience it to its fullest. Hobbies included exploring, photography, music, boats, cooking, writing and wood working.  Luane was one of the most positive, kind, genuine and generous people you would want to meet with a brilliant mind and heart of gold, leaving a positive impact on everyone he met. He had this knowledge and eloquence of delivering his thoughts in writing that he would share with his family and friends. He will be forevermore loved and missed.
    Luane is survived by his parents, Howard and Linda Hanson, Trail, sisters, Wendy (Jeff) Thrane of Front Royal, VA and Joanne Olson, Thief River Falls, brother, Dean (Naomi) Hanson, Trail; nieces and nephews, Ariel Berry, Austin Thrane, Wyatt Olson, Tyler, Faith, Clancy, Carter, Gracie and Tucker Hanson; uncles, Larry Watne and Lyle Watne of Alexandria, Lonnie Watne, Trail, and Lowell (Sherrlene) Watne, East Grand Forks; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Kenneth Sanders, 79

Goodridge - Kenneth Sanders, 79, of Goodridge died peacefully on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2016 at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, N.D. with his loving family at his side.
       Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 31 at Faith Lutheran Church in Goodridge with Rev. Kristin Ostercamp officiating. Burial followed at Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls.
    Kenneth James Sanders was born on July 6, 1937 in Thief River Falls, MN the son of Emil and Ethel (Myrin) Sanders. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith.  He grew up on the family farm in Cloverleaf Township, Pennington County. He attended one year of school in Mavie before it closed, then Ken went to the Goodridge School through the 8th grade.  Ken attended the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston, graduating in 1955.
    Ken returned to the Sanders Family Farm and farmed with his dad and brother, Richard. Emil died suddenly in 1960 and Richard moved in 1962, and Ken continued the farming operation of beef cattle and small grains.
    On March 3, 1962, Ken was united in marriage to Ruth Johnson at the First Lutheran Church in Goodridge. To this union, three children were born, Rhonda in 1963, Kevin in 1964 and Carna in 1970.
    After selling the cattle in 1970, Ken and Ruth bought a boat and the family spent many years fishing and camping at Northwest Angle at Lake of The Woods and later at Springsteel at Lake of The Woods. Ken and Ruth have enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, mostly in Arizona and California. Yuma was their home from January through March for many years.  Ken enjoyed bowling in the Service League and in the Farmer Merchant League, deer hunting, watching his children and grandchildren play sports, playing solitaire, reading the paper especially the funny page, watching sports on TV, and driving around looking at his crops. Ken had a passion for decorating for the Christmas holiday.  He built many outdoor trees and ornaments and was most proud of his 18 foot tall Christmas cactus.  
    He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Goodridge, Goodridge Lions Club, Eagles Club in Thief River Falls and served on the Cloverleaf Township Board and Farmers Co-op Elevator Board.  
    The Sanders Family Farm became a Century Farm in 2004 of which Ken was the third generation.  He was very proud to help the next generations continue the legacy of the Sanders Family Farm.
    Survivors include his loving wife, Ruth of 54 years; children, Rhonda (Mark) Rerick of Fargo, N.D., Kevin (Regina) Sanders of Goodridge and Carna (David) Von Holtum of Thief River Falls; grandchildren, Hailey (Brady Hoffman) & Issac Rerick, Landon & Christopher Sanders, Jenna & Alex Von Holtum; sister, Sandra (Gale) Packard of Minneapolis; sister-in-law, Lila (Joel) Killoran of Morris; and many other relatives and friends.
    He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard; granddaughter, Sarah Rose Sanders and grandparents, Andrew & Sigrid Sanders and Nils & Julia Myrin.

Thief River Falls -  Gladys Larson of Thief River Falls, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2016 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, N.D,, at the age of 93.
    Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 30 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, with Rev. Mark Helgeland officiating.  Interment followed at Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls.
    Gladys Eileen Larson was born on June 17, 1923 in Aitkin, to Henry and Hazel (Borg) Hedlund. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Eksjo Lutheran Church, Lake Park. Gladys attended and graduated from Lake Park High School.  She later attended Globe Business College and College of Medical and Lab Technology in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Gladys served in the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps at San Leandro Hospital in California. She was also employed at Abbott Hospital as Assistant Record Librarian.
    On August 25, 1956 Gladys was united in marriage to Irvin Larson in Mora. To this union, three children were born: Mary Kay, Jim and Kathryn.  The coupled lived in Detroit Lakes, Minneapolis, and Thief River Falls. Gladys was employed at Northwestern Hospital as a Nurse Aide for 10 years.
    She is survived by her husband, Irvin Larson, Thief River Falls; sisters, Marlys Young of Fargo, ND and Marcella Erickson, Detroit Lakes, MN; brothers, Jim Hedlund of Detroit Lakes, Robert Hedlund of Detroit Lakes; children, Mary Kay Hawrelok of Grand Forks, ND and Jim Larson of Thief River Falls; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
    Gladys was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathryn Larson; granddaughter, Diana Triplett; her parents, Henry and Hazel Hedlund; her sisters, Virginia Kiehl and Rose Evans; her brothers, Wallace Hedlund and Clarence Hedlund.

Dr. Lois A. Lund, 89

    New City, N.Y. - Dr. Lois A. Lund, long-time resident of East Lansing, Michigan, retired professor and dean in Michigan State University (MSU), died December 19 in New City, NY, after several months of illness.  She was 89.
     Dr. Lund was born and grew up in Thief River Falls. She attended the University of Minnesota, received a Ph.D in Food Research and Agricultural Economics at that institution, and subsequently served as Assistant Director at the School of Home Economics.
    She then became Associate Dean in the College of Agriculture and Home Economics at Ohio State University. In 1973, she joined MSU as Dean of the College of Human Ecology and she served in that position until 1985.  From that date to her retirement in 1996 she was Professor of Food Sciences and Human Nutrition.
     Dr. Lund was a member of the Board of Directors of CMS Energy Corporation from 1983 to 1997.  Earlier, while at Ohio State University, she was a USAID Executive Visitor to USAID-OSU universities in India and Brazil. She was a member of numerous professional and honorary organizations and served on an array of advisory boards and councils.
     Dr. Lund was passionate about her basset hounds who were more like children to her than dogs. Her beloved Molly died in October. She was also very active and supportive of her church, St. Paul Lutheran Church in East Lansing, MI where she regularly attended Bible studies, women's groups, and any opportunity to promote fellowship that was offered. A spiritual woman, she was often found counseling young members and families.
     Funeral services will be held in Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Suffern, NY, on January 7.  Interment will be in a site near her parents, Luella and Robert J. Lund, in Thief River Falls.
     Dr. Lund is survived by a sister, Louella Gottlieb, Suffern, NY, a brother, Robert Lund of Lexington, MA, a niece, Liisa Warren, of Sloatsburg, NY, who has been her guide and companion during her final months, and additional nieces and nephews and their families in Minnesota and Massachusetts.

Fertile - Muret Berhow, 99, Fertile, died Monday, December 19, 2016 at Pioneer Memorial Care Center, Erskine.
     Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile. Burial was held at Varnes Lutheran Cemetery, rural Fertile.
  Muret Carrol Berhow was born to Oliver (August) and Alma (Overland) Berhow on May 20, 1917 in Liberty township northwest of Fertile.  He was the oldest of seven children.
    Muret was baptized and confirmed at Varnes Lutheran Church, Liberty Township.  He attended Lakeview School and Liberty School near Fertile.  As a child he was an avid hunter and trapper.
    While a young man Muret farmed with his parents NW of Fertile. During the depression, at 17 years of age, he left home for 3 years to join the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCCs) and in 1942 at the age of 24 he joined the United States Navy. Muret sailed on the USS Joseph Hewes, USS LST 173, and USS Waukesha. He survived the sinking of the Joseph Hewes during an attack at Casablanca and hid along the shore of Africa until being rescued.  Muret did tours taking him to Africa, Italy, France, England, Hawaii, Okinawa and the Philippines. While on the USS Waukesha he was present for the Japanese surrender and participated in the occupation of Nagasaki, Japan after the atomic bomb was dropped there. He was honorably discharged on February 28, 1946 with the rank of Chief Ship Fitter.
    While on leave in Washington, DC he met Dorothy Pilger.  They married in 1946 and made their home on the family farm NW of Fertile.  Here they raised two daughters, Patrice and Terese.  Muret was active in Varnes Church his entire life. Muret also served on the Fertile Beltrami Schoolboard, and was an active member of the National Farmers Organization.
  Muret had a knack for problem solving, designing, and building things.  One of his favorite projects was a functioning four wheel drive tractor made from scratch. His retirement found him enjoying his projects in the shop. Muret especially loved his wife Dottie and his kids and grandkids, often telling them he loved them more than they’d ever know. He was thrilled to get to know his great-granddaughters Louisa and Eva in his very old age. He also loved his nieces and nephews, friends, his Norwegian descent, and farm life. Building things in his shop, visiting with friends or family, telling a good story, and making new acquaintances were his favorite pastimes.
  Muret is survived by his daughters Pat Wilson (Jim), Terry Hest (Jim); grandchildren: Michael Wilson, Katherine Wilson, Ben Hest (Kelsey); two great-granddaughters, Louisa and Eva Hest; nieces, nephews and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
    Muret was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, father August, and mother Alma; Siblings: Burnice  (Elden) Engelstad, Marvin (Stella) Berhow, Carna (Ward) Trager, (Bill Russell), DeLoris (Don) Doak, Arlene (Bill) Blewett, Leon (Corrine) Berhow.  Nephews and nieces: Gary Doak, Alex and Bob Toebbe, Kelly and Dianne Engelstad, Wayne Berhow, and one Grandnephew: Chris Doak.

    Thief River Falls - Viola Wikstrom, 95, of Thief River Falls, formerly of Grygla died Thursday December 22, 2016 at Thief River Care Center, Thief River Falls.
    Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 30, 2016 at Grace Lutheran Church, Grygla, with Rev. Vicki Worthington officiating.  Interment will follow at St. Petri Lutheran Cemetery, Grygla.
    Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service on Thursday, December 29, at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls.  Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Friday.
    Viola Adeline Lundell was born February 25, 1921 at Minot, ND, where her father was employed as a carpenter.  Her parents were Edna (Swanson) Lundell and Lewis M. Lundell.  They moved to rural Argyle, where Viola attended country school District No. 50, with about 30 pupils and one teacher. She attended high school at Stephen, where she worked for her room and board, only coming home once a month.
    On June 3, 1939, Viola was united in marriage to Vernon Wikstrom, by Judge Nels Hanson.  The first year the couple lived in Kennedy, where they both worked. Viola worked in a restaurant where she was paid $5 a week. The couple moved to Grygla, in 1940, where they farmed and raised their 4 children.  
    When Vernon died in July 1999, Viola continued to live on the farm almost 10 years longer, after which she moved to Grygla in Senior housing in 2008.  The family were members of Minnesota Farmer’s Union Association, where Viola held various offices for many years.  They also were members of Marshall County Democratic party, where Viola was chairwoman over 16 years.  
    She also served as Seventh District vice chairwoman for many years.  She was a member of Lull Awhile Home Makers for over 65 years.  She was a homemaker, loved to cook and bake, especially pies and buns and raised a large garden and had a large strawberry patch.
    Viola loved the farm and would help Vernon with haying and at harvest time.  She worked six seasons at the turkey plant in Thief River Falls.  In her older years, she embroidered and made many quilts. Every new baby got an embroidered quilt and she won many Grand Champion Ribbons at the fair.
    Vernon and Viola loved to travel by car or bus. They visited every state except Hawaii and every province in Canada. They enjoyed one trip overseas, visiting Sweden, Norway, Germany and  Denmark. Viola loved when her family came to visit and all family gatherings.    
    Viola is survived by children: Allan (Phyllis), Baxter, Jeanne Johnson, Thief River Falls, Dianne (Derwin) Tabor, Maple Plain, and Keith (Yvonne), West Fargo, ND; 13 grandchildren; 1 step-grandson, 31 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; sister: Joanne Lucius, Alexandria; sister-in-law: Dorothy Anderson, Osseo; many cousins, nieces, nephews and Vernon’s extended family.
    She is preceded in death by husband Vernon; parents, Lewis Lundell and Edna Anderson; stepfather, John Anderson; sister, Amy and husband Helmer Lind; sister, Eunice and husband Smiley Holmes; brother, Milo Lundell and wife Barbara; brothers-in-law, Don Lucius, Truman Strand; stepsister, Alice and husband LeRoy Adams; step-brother, Leonard Anderson; son-in-law, Leroy Johnson; daughter-in-law, Mable Wikstrom and nephews, Loren and Jerry Holmes.

    Thief River Falls - Dennis Erickson, 74, died on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at Sanford Hospital in Thief River Falls.
    Memorial services were held Saturday, January 14 at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls, with Larry Myhrer officiating. A private burial will be held in the Spring at Rosewood Cemetery, New Solum Township, Marshall County.
    Dennis Willard Erickson was born on August 21, 1942 in Thief River Falls, the son of Willard and Bernice (Johnson) Erickson. He attended school in Thief River Falls.
    Dennis joined the United States Army and proudly served his country.  After his service he moved to the Twin Cities where he worked for Keys Well Drilling Company.  A few years later he moved back to Thief River Falls.  Dennis purchased his grandfather’s drilling rig and started Erickson Well Drilling where he drilled for over four decades.
    He later met Geraldine Joy Olson and they were married on December 10, 1972 in Goodridge. They made their home in Thief River Falls along with their four children:  Wade, Kim, Marla, and Ranada.
    Dennis loved to hunt, socialize, and dance. As a third generation well driller, his passion was well known.  He was a member of the American Legion in Thief River Falls. Dennis will always be remembered as a kind, generous, helpful, honest, and ethical man who will be dearly missed.  
    Dennis is survived by his special friend, Darlene Clark of Lengby;  his children, Kim (Mark Haugen) Foster, of Thief River Falls, Marla (Jason) King of Thief River Falls, Ranada Erickson of Denver, CO; 3 grandchildren, Samm Foster, Andrew Anderson, Ryan King; 2 great-grandchildren, Teagan Foster and Paxton Wilson; sisters, Diane Erickson of Thief River Falls, and Debra Hagman of Fargo, ND; brother-in-law, Lloyd Olson, Fallon, NV, and several nieces and nephews.

    Jamesville, N.Y. - Carol M. Hare, 86, of Jamesville, NY, passed away on Monday, Jan. 9, 2017, at Iroquois Nursing Home with her loving husband by her side.

    Carol was born on November 11, 1930 in Thief River Falls, daughter of the late Charles and Mabel Dicken. Carol enjoyed making Japanese Dolls and keeping up her household. In her early years, she and her husband, Bob, took many trips out West. She retired in 1991 from Eastman Kodak in Rochester. She was predeceased by her daughter, Catherine and granddaughter, Shannon.

    Crookston - Patricia Rose King, 52, of Crookston, died of natural causes at her residence on Thursday, January 12, 2017.
    A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Patricia Rose King will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 21, 2017, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston, with The Very Rev. Vincent Miller, presiding. Visitation with the family will be for one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will take place at the Calvary Cemetery in Crookston in the spring.
    Patti, as she was affectionately known by her family and friends, was born at St. Paul, on January 9, 1965, to her birth-mother, Ramona “Noni” Paulson. On January 19, she was adopted by her loving parents, Ralph and MaryJane (Delorme) Hagen of Crookston.
    While growing up in Crookston, Patti was baptized and confirmed at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and graduated from Central High School in 1983. She was united in marriage to Jeffrey Lynn King on March 14, 1997 at Indianapolis, IN.
    Throughout her life, Patti had lived and worked on both coasts of the United State and places in between, including California, North Carolina, Indiana, Arkansas, Minnesota, and elsewhere.
    She was employed as a photographer, worked for a carnival, and for 10 years was with Digi-Key in Thief River Falls. In recent years Patti also attended the University of Minnesota-Crookston before transferring to Northland Community and Technical College in East Grand Forks, where she earned an Associate Degree with Academic Excellence in 2013.
    She was proudly inducted into Phi Theta Kappa there in 2012. Patti found her birth-mother in February of 2013. They and their families were delighted to get to know each other. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, and was always excited to see them. She had a cat named Teddy that she loved very dearly. Patti was very loved by all who knew her and will be deeply missed.
    Loving family members include her daughter: Rebecca Lynn Strand (Jeremiah Smith) of Thief River Falls; granddaughter, Gracelynn Marie Strand; step-son, Jeffrey King Jr. (Megan Martin) of Newfolden; step-grandchildren: Alana, Mariah-Jane, and Cameron King; father, Ralph Hagen of Crookston; birth-mother, Noni Bordwell of Albuquerque; siblings: Kenneth Hagen (Lori Kinney) of Coon Rapids, Duane (Kerri) Hagen of Langdon, ND, and Ruth Hagen (Christian Carrico) of Strandquist; half-brother and sisters, Ginger (Cameron) Lacy of Mountain View, CA, Pepper (Marz) Cooper of Albuquerque, and Danny Bordwell of Palmer, AK; dear friends, Jan Smit and Bruce Christensen of Crookston, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.     Crookston - Solange (Asselin) (Beauchane) Radke, 94, Crookston, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2016 at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston.
    Funeral mass was held Tuesday, January 17 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Crookston, in the spring.
    Solange was born on April 7, 1922 in Crookston,  to Fred and Clemence (Gousse) Asselin. She attended St. Joseph’s Academy and later Fisher Public School. She graduated from Fisher High School in 1939. At the age of 50 she went to Agassiz Valley School of Practical Nursing and graduated with an Associate Degree in nursing in 1973.
    On February 19, 1941, Solange married Alton Beauchane in Red Lake Falls. They had five children, Kenneth, Daniel, Dorothy, Ronald and Richard.
    Solange worked for Woolworth’s in Crookston until the mid-1950s. She then worked with Alton in construction until 1973. After nursing school she went to work for Riverview Nursing Home as a Licensed Practical Nurse from 1974-1987 and retired on May 22, 1987.
    On January 5, 1980 she married Elmer Radke in Crookston.
    She is survived by her children Kenneth (Patricia) Beauchane, of Fertile, Daniel Beauchane of Owensville, IN, Dorothy (Ernest) Franklin of Orange Park, FL, Ronald (Monica) Beauchane of Red Lake Falls, and Richard Beauchane of Red Lake Falls; grandchildren Jody (Stacy) Beauchane, Chad (Jeannette) Beauchane, Eric Franklin, Ann (Randal) Gillund, Elliott (Tara) Franklin, Justin (Ruth) Beauchane, Deborah (Samuel) Higginbotham, Michelle (Anthony) Touketto, Christopher (Nichole) Beauchane; 23 great-grandchildren, with three more on the way; five stepchildren, Dean (Ginny) Radke, Connie (Robert) Nichols, Greg (Karen) Radke, Ken Radke, and David (Sandy) Radke.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; parents, Fred and Clemence; brother, Robert Asselin and his wife, Virginia; sister, Simone Audette and her husband, Walter; infant brother, William Eli Asselin; nephew, Don Audette; and niece Dolores (Audette) Ricard and her husband, Tom.
    Solange was a member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Sacred Heart Circle and a former Hospice volunteer. She loved playing cards, walking and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Thief River Falls - Douglas Edward Booth passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at Physicians Regional Hospital in Knoxville, TN.
    A memorial service for Douglas will be held Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Johnson Funeral Home in Thief River Falls.
    Douglas was born in Thief River Falls on September 25, 1955 to Theodore and Shirley Booth.
    He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church/Redeemer in Thief River Falls. Douglas graduated from Lincoln High school in 1974.  Douglas took a drafting class at the AVTI.  He enlisted in the Navy in 1976.
    On December 30, 1978, Douglas married Tonia Larson. They had two sons, Nicholas and Jonathan.
    On March 22, 1991 Douglas married Julia Portrey in Sturgis, SD. They were happily married for 25 years and 11 months. 
    Douglas enjoyed watching television and movies during his home time, especially his favorite, Ground Hog Day, working in the yard and relaxing by an outdoor fire. He loved the water and had received a scuba diver's certificate.
    Douglas had a unique sense of humor and dancing eyes. He is greatly missed by all of us. His favorite job was doing what he did best from 1994-2017, driving big rigs. He endured a difficult and sometimes lonely life providing for his family doing what he did best, driving semi-trucks.  Home was too seldom but always welcome. When you see a big truck, in honor of Douglas, please remember to give them the courtesy they deserve.
    Douglas is survived by his wife Julia of Enterprise, AL; his children: Nicholas (Carrie) Booth, Jonathan (Marie) Booth, Kelsey Booth, stepson Clifton (Stacie) Portrey, and stepdaughter Ashley Portrey; his mother, Shirley Booth; brothers: Donald, Dennis (Sherry), Dean and sister, Brenda (Ray Tuinstra). St. Hilaire - Barbara Drees, 75, of St. Hilaire, died on Wednesday, March, 8, 2017 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
    Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, March 13, 2017 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls, with Father Rick Lambert presiding. Burial was held at St. Bernard’s Cemetery.
    Barbara Jane Battleson was born March 22, 1941 at Thief River Falls, the daughter of George and Ardith (Haney) Battleson. Barbara lost her mother at a young age and was raised by her grandmother in Thief River Falls, where she attended school. She graduated high school, was crowned a beauty queen and married her high school sweetheart, Harley, in the year of 1959.
    The couple made their home in St. Hilaire, where four children were raised.  Barbara held various jobs in her lifetime but she saved her favorite for last.  She was the Director of Housing at Skylight Apartments.  Barbara retired in 2010.  
    She was a proud grandma, attended many hockey games, was a fixture at the softball field and to be known as Gigi by her great grandchildren.  Barbara’s Saturday nights were reserved for Mass at St. Bernard’s, which she held close to her heart. One of Barb’s hobbies was baking.  Her specialty was breads and many family and friends enjoyed the treats.  Barbara loved a good mystery, her Tablet and her dog, Maggie.  She will be greatly missed.
    Barbara is survived by her children: Hollilyn (Steven) Anderson, Kristile (Max Semande) Drees, Paul (Amy) Drees, and Ryan (Shizuka) Drees;  five grandchildren, Erika Grace (Ben), Thomas, Christopher, Casey and Elise; and two great-grandchildren, Avery and Quentin.
    She is preceded in death by her husband, Harley, her parents and many aunts and uncles.
