Thief River Falls - Duane Nelson passed away at Eventide Lutheran Home in Moorhead the morning of Friday, August 4, 2017, with family members by his side.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead. Visitation was held Tuesday evening, and will also be held one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
Duane Clayton Nelson was born on February 22, 1931, in Barnesville, to Hartvig and Mabel (Solum) Nelson. He grew up on the family farm, attended country school until 8th grade and was a member of the Rollag Lutheran Church. He completed his high school education at Barnesville High School and the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston.
Duane married Inez Arneson on June 14, 1953, at Rollag Lutheran Church. The couple made their first home at the Nelson farm.
In 1954, Duane was drafted into the Army and left for his basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. Duane returned home on leave when the couple was blessed with their first child, Debra Mae.
Duane was next stationed in Fort Hood, TX, where he and Inez welcomed their second daughter, Patricia Kay. Honorably discharged from the Army in 1956, Duane began classes at Concordia College, Moorhead, where the couple’s family continued to grow with the birth of daughter, Beth Renee. Duane graduated from Concordia in 1960 and from the Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul, in 1963.
Ordained at Rollag Lutheran Church, Duane answered his first call to the parishes of First Lutheran Church, Middle River, and Gustav Adolph Lutheran Church, Strathcona, where Duane and Inez’s son, David Martin, was born.
In 1966, the family left Minnesota to serve four years of missionary work in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, East Africa. In 1970, Duane accepted his next call to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes, where he served the congregation for 27 years.
The family was, again, blessed with the addition of two more daughters, Susan Marie and Lori Ann. Duane and Inez retired to Moorhead in 1997, where they continued to celebrate a life of blessings.
Duane’s passion for his Christian faith, singing, and laughter was best summed up by him in his writings about Christmas gatherings growing up: “We would all gather around the piano and sing and sing until we couldn’t sing anymore. Then we would indulge in another gift… a sense of humor. We could spend a lot of time laughing until our eyes were full of tears. But it was always in the context of giving honor to Christ. That taught me where real humor was found, and that is in the context of the joy of living in the Christian faith and life.” Passing along his love of faith, song and laughter will surely be his legacy.  Soli Deo Gloria.
He is survived by his wife Inez, daughters Debra (David) Bottem, Barnum; Patty (Kris) Gulsvig, Moorhead; Beth (Tom) Iverson, Moorhead; son David (Anne) Nelson, Vadnais Heights; daughters Susie (Aaron) Enright, Princeton; Lori (Natty) Messick, Fertile; nine grandchildren, Becky (Tyler) Fisher, Peter Gulsvig, Kyle, Mick and Siri Nelson, Annika, Zoe and Bjorn Messick, Lily Enright; one great-grandchild Hazel Fisher; and his brother Harland Nelson, Decorah, IA, as well as nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Curtis; sisters-in-law Mary and Corinne; and brother-in-law Wayne.

J. Evangelyn “Dolly” Boice, 86

Redwood City, CA - J. Evangelyn “Dolly” Boice, 86, of Redwood City, CA, died peacefully at Gordon Manor Residential Care Home in Redwood City, CA on April 11, 2017.
A memorial will be held on September 24, 2017 at the home of their long-time neighbors and special friends, Gary and Teresa Godfrey, 20 Tynan Way in Portola Valley, CA.
Dolly was the daughter of Elling O. and Mary N. Iverson and was born and raised in Thief River Falls.
Dolly graduated from Lincoln Senior High School in Thief River Falls in 1948, and the University of Minnesota in 1952 with a B.B.A. in Economics and Business Administration.  During her college years and while working a summer job at Lutsen Resort, she met her future husband and life-long partner, John, from Minneapolis. They were united in marriage in Thief River Falls on August 8, 1952.
After working a few years in Minneapolis, the couple moved to the Bay Area in 1956. After a couple of different positions, Dolly joined Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, CA in 1959.  She retired from SRI as Senior Business Manager.  Along the way, while comfortable that her niece and nephews thought she was a secretary, Dolly actually had a TOP SECRET Government Security Classification while working on the study of Naval Anti-air Warfare, Artillery Mobility, Submarine Personnel Costs and Ground- and Air-based Reconnaissance and Surveillance Systems.
Dolly and John loved living in the Bay Area and eventually moved into their Portola Valley home in 1964.  Their home was a constant source of pleasure for them, as was walking the hills of Portola Valley and Woodside.
The couple was very active and volunteered endlessly for the Woodside Highlands Improvement Club, their homeowners association. They were leaders in working with neighbors during the semi-annual road days and setting up and maintaining an emergency response network for the Highlands and Portola Valley.
They lived their lives to the fullest. After retiring, they traveled the world and especially enjoyed African safaris. They loved to hike, cross country ski and camp in the Sierra Mountains. Both loved to watch a variety of sports and for several years were season ticket holders for Stanford Women’s Basketball.
They loved walking the hills of their neighborhood and could be seen hiking the trails in the early morning hours as well as the afternoon - always with a smile on their faces. It was indeed a sad day in August of 2015 when the decision was made to move Dolly into a care facility as she continued to battle Alzheimer's Dementia.
Dolly was a favorite of many of the staff at Gordon Manor. Her personality and wit attracted workers and volunteers to her. After a weeklong stay at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, CA as the result of renal failure in early April, she returned to Gordon Manor under Hospice Care, peacefully passing away shortly thereafter.
Dolly is survived by her sister-in-law Mary Lou Boice, Lincoln City, OR, nephews Peter (Emilyn) Iverson, Bani, Pangasinan, Philippines, Scott (Peggy) Iverson, Apple Valley, Keith Iverson, Thief River Falls, niece Karen (Chris) Jenson, Thief River Falls, cousin Marilyn Perasco, Arnold, CA, and the many neighbors and friends of Woodside Highlands, Portola Valley and beyond.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, John R. Boice, and brother and sister-in- law Elling T. and Joyce M. Iverson.
The family requests that any memorials be directed to the Pennington County Humane Society, 15598 US Hwy 59 NE, PO Box 64, Thief River Falls, MN 56701 (www.pawstrf.org).
